Suhres wurde 1929 während des Baus des Sujiwka-Stausees an der Krynka gegründet und besitzt den Status einer Stadt seit dem Jahr 1938. Der Name leitet sich vom nahegelegenen Kraftwerk Suhres, ukrainisch ЗуГРЕС (Зуївська ГРЕС) ab.
