Die Stadt ist nach dem Tonawanda Creek benannt, einem Fluss der im Niagara mündet. Tonawanda bedeutet in der Sprache des Indianerstamms Seneca „schnell fließendes Wasser“. Die Stadt Tonawanda ist nicht mit der gleichnamigen City of Tonawanda zu verwechseln, welche im selben County liegt.
