Is it possible to run Thunderbird in a dual set up Ubuntu 24.04 and Windows 11 pro using the same profile folder?

I got the impression from other posts that it worked in the past. When I try it I run into various problems. I fixed most and I got it running but TB on Ubuntu did not find the passwords. In an attempt to fix this I reinstalled TB on Ubuntu. When I now point profile.ini to the Windows profile folder I get the error "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding.".

Is there anyone with Windows 11 and Ubuntu 24.04 who got this working, and if so, what steps did you take?

  • I'm using IMAP, it works perfectly. Of course this is without using the same Profile Folder. – Wolfgang Blessen Jan 10 '25 at 11:51
  • I use same profile on many Ubuntu installs. Have not shared with Windows since XP days. I used to do that with both Firefox & Thunderbird, but FF stopped working & have not tried again lately. I keep profile in a shared data partition, since only Linux I have data in a ext4 partition. Back with XP I also had another shared as NTFS. You will need the .deb version, not newer snap. https://askubuntu.com/questions/1280707/how-to-uninstall-snap and http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder – oldfred Jan 10 '25 at 14:35
