I've been trying to upgrade ubuntu 24 to 25 on my iMac2011 but it doesn't work. With Ubuntu 24 it works fine. I've lost all my data cause I needed to downgrade ubuntu 24 to being able to start ubuntu.

Why ubuntu doesn't work with old Macs anymore ?

  • When you say fails/ doesn't work, what happens exactly? Black screen? error message? – Archisman Panigrahi Apr 18 '25 at 20:54
  • My recommendation is to install the latest Ubuntu ISO on a usb drive and try it that way. Run it live by choosing try Ubuntu from the boot menu. You will be able to see if it works without installing anything. This way you will be able to rule out/in some corruption in your local install. – lensboard Apr 18 '25 at 21:25

    Please be clear with details; there is no Ubuntu 25; and no release-upgrade path from Ubuntu Core 24 to 25.04, and details matter. Some systems can be non-destructively re-installed, but we don't know what you're using as details are unclear. Ubuntu 24.10 (2024-October release) has an release-upgrade problem thus release-upgrades are currently closed; Upgrades from 24.04 to 24.10 are open however, and if using Ubuntu Core 24 there is no current upgrade path; it will only have an upgrade path when Ubuntu Core 26 is released. – guiverc Apr 18 '25 at 22:02

  • I've downgrade because the boot partition, the uefi, since version 25 doesn't manage to find / partition. Maybe it's because the uefi in this mac is 32bits ? – ROBIN Dimitri Apr 19 '25 at 21:13
