I am using Ubuntu 25.04 on my ASUS VivoBook laptop. I am considering buying a used Dell PowerEdge server and setting up Proxmox on it, to have different servers on it, such as a Nextcloud server, on the host. My concern is really that, I don't have a lot of space, so I want to keep it somewhere hidden, and connect into the server using my laptop. I know there are ways to remote into it wirelessly using VNC and SSH, but how do I do this via wired/cabled methods? This is important to me, so that in the event the network goes down, I can connect into the machine without having to have an additional monitor and keyboard on hand.

Your question is not very clear. As long as your laptop and the Proxmox server are on the same home network, you can connect using either WiFi or Ethernet cable. You will need a monitor and keyboard to install Proxmox. After that you can connect to Proxmox (and all the virtual machines inside it) using a browser like Firefox, or Chrome in your laptop. By default, your Proxmox web address will only work when your laptop is connected to the home network. – user68186 Jul 15 '25 at 16:07

Allow me to clarify, is there a way to use my laptop as a KVM without relying on the network? – Jul 15 '25 at 20:49

That comment was even more confusing! What do you mean by without network? Do you want to contact your laptop to the server directly with a cable? – user68186 Jul 15 '25 at 21:08

Yes, that would be how I would like to do it, by using some type of cable to connect into the server by physical means and using my laptop as some type of keyboard/monitor/mouse. – Jul 15 '25 at 21:59

Could you please edit your question and make it clearer, by what you said in the comments. – user68186 Jul 15 '25 at 23:01

Just plug the laptop &server on the same switch. Or use hostapd as an access point if the server can have wifi. – petep Jul 22 '25 at 06:17

I found this tool that accomplishes this objective.

Apparently it has a .exe for Windows and this linux software as well but the Linux version requires it yet. I just discovered it if anyone is familiar with it let me know if I should keep looking or if this it it.
