I am using ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Its EOL was APRIL 2025. But still getting updates on 20.04 LTS even though ESM is not enabled. Any particular reason why I am getting updates still? In July month I had below updates.

There are two "PRO" repositories - ESM-Infra and ESM-Apps. YOu'll still receive updates to critical things like the pro client and its dependencies. However, you won't be getting other updates. Additionally, if you do enable Pro, you've got Infra which will touch core components of Linux and Apps which is more broad and general apps. If you don't have Pro enabled, you may still get selective updates in the system for specific components backported in order to let Pro still work – Thomas Ward Aug 19 '25 at 16:02

"Ubuntu Pro 20.04 LTS will remain fully supported until May 2030."

The bottom 2 in your list:

  • ubuntu-pro-client-l10n/focal-updates 36ubuntu0~20.04 amd64 [upgradable from: 35.1ubuntu0~20.04]
  • ubuntu-pro-client/focal-updates 36ubuntu0~20.04 amd64 [upgradable from: 35.1ubuntu0~20.04]

  • But I have not enabled ESM. Upon running "apt-get update", I could see the below message, which confirms that ESM is not enabled 17 updates can be applied immediately. 14 of these updates are standard security updates. To see these additional updates run: apt list --upgradable

41 additional security updates can be applied with ESM Infra. Learn more about enabling ESM Infra service for Ubuntu 20.04 at

  • @ShaikMusthafa the updates you show all seem to packages needed for the ESM client itself – muru Aug 20 '25 at 06:27
  • SO is it expected the we receive updates on ESM client packages? But until when we do be getting these updates? – Shaik Musthafa Aug 21 '25 at 05:01
  • Yes. and until May 2030. (due to the bottom 2 repo's in your list) – Rinzwind Aug 21 '25 at 06:19
