    • Entferne folgende Schrauben:

    • Zwei 8mm 5-point Pentalobe Schrauben

    • Acht 2,5 mm 5-point Pentalobe Schrauben

    When you say:

    Remove the following ten screws:

Two 8 mm 5-point Pentalobe screws

Eight 2.5 mm 5-point Pentalobe screws

Do the 8mm & 2.5mm dimensions refer to the LENGTH of those screws, or the size of the pentalobe? That is, are there other sizes of pentalobe drivers like there are for hex, phillips and torx? When only one dimension is provided, it is usually the socket/driver size, not the screw length, maybe since the length cannot be seen when the screw is installed.

Can I suggest that you clarify your instructions so folks are confident they are only in need of _one_ pentalobe driver?

    Nerdily yours,

Larry (whose iPhone 4S can now get through a day without 6 recharges thanks to ifixit.com ;-)

    larryleveen -

The 8mm and 2.5mm are the length of the screws. One pentalobe P5 screwdriver suffices for all the screws (P5 is implicitly the size of the pentalobe screw heads).

    Michael Welham -

I sourced all the parts from ifixit, plus a magnetic project mat which I found to be very useful for organising the teardown and reassembly.

    Allen -

    The magnetic mat is

    GERARD SZAREK -

Keep the 2.5mm tiny screws away from the MagSafe connector as they will be attracted and sucked in to the magnet.

    Frank O'Carroll -

A tip an old bench tech taught me that has saved me many times: I put clear “Scotch” tape over the case screws as they became “free”. The tape kept them in place while I lifted the lid off, cleaned it etc.

    Michael Mee -

Thank you for a really smart tip! I will be using that countless more times!

I’m confused about internet recovery and installing MacOS. Is all of this done before placing in the new ssd card or after. I don’t have any files that I would like to safe/transfer, is all of this necessary, if I don’t do it before placing new ssd, will I still be able to instal/upgrade macOS afterwards.

It’s an old Mac and now it won’t start or charge, I know I will have to replace battery and put new battery first and turn on Mac before doing the ssd stuff. Since it won’t effing start.

I’m really clueless about backing up old ssd, since I don’t need any files, besides MacOS(software) ,and is that related to the ssd?

    AMG -

The answer to your question: You need to insert your SSD into the computer before internet recovery. If you start the recovery before inserting SSD, it won’t affect the setup, you won’t damage anything. But your SSD will not be detected (as there isn’t one inserted.)

Also, a little tip: If you bought a used SSD, go into Disk Utility and format the drive with the highest security level to permanently remove all of the previous files.

Also a FYI: Internet Recovery will load up Mac OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks, so I would recommend making a recovery drive from a Big Sur (or desired version) through another Mac, and a USB. You can visit this support doc: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

    Hope this helps! -Dan

I got a macbook air with a damaged and swollen battery. I could remove all screws, except one 2,5 mm screw. I’m afraid it got damaged while attempting to remove it, I have no grip with the P5 pentalobe screwdriver. How can I proceed?

    Robert Hermans -

    Hi Robert!

Try some techniques found in this stripped screw removal guide. Good luck!

    Arthur Shi -

Hello I have a macbook air they are say they do not have parts for my laptop macbook air 11 inches 2013 mid need to replace battery which one to buy

    vensilver -

Hello! This is the part you want—maybe we’re not able to ship it to you if you’re out of the United States. The battery in your MacBook Air should be the same for all 11” between mid-2011 to early-2015.

    Arthur Shi -

The smaller screws went in more easily when I put back all the screws along the hinge edge first.

I performed this on my MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2011), model A1370. Rather than using the spudger to un-attach the batter connector, I gripped either side with my fingers as the second photographs indicated, and gently pry/wiggled it up and out by initially pinching into the side gap with my finger nails. The reason I did it this way is that the spudger works by leverage and I was afraid to rest it against the components surrounding the connector. The photos and instructions are excellent and illustrate the maneuver perfectly.

    Allen -

Hello there... In my case by battery exploded.... Can I still try to change it using these instructions?

    Fabio Matos -

The instruction to lift the edges of battery connector before disconnecting is certainly not clear. In my case, the cconnector pins came off the board with the battery, requiring further costly repairs. I would suggest that this instruction be more specific and include a caution.

    Deirdre Rogan -

It worked fine for me, but as others mentioned, you need to be careful to remove the battery connector from the motherboard connector and not accidentally remove the motherboard connector from the motherboard itself.

Additionally, on reassembly, I found that quit a bit of pressure was needed to get the new battery's connector to snap in place. More than I was comfortable applying, but it was necessary and it worked without a problem.

    shamino -

I just used my finger(nails), came off easily (even though i have a full iFixIt set).

    • Zwei 5,2 mm T5 Torx Schrauben

    • Eine 6 mm T5 Torx Schraube

    • Zwei 2,6 mm T5 Torx Schrauben

In my case the screw points connecting the old battery the case had fractured or broken. The broken bits needed to be cleaned out of the case before installing the replacement battery. Didn't want any loose fragments rattling about inside.

What if new battery comes with what looks like plastic around the 6 cells?

    Allison -

I'm having trouble reconnecting the pins to the new battery cable. Any suggestions?

    Deirdre Rogan -

The cable on my new battery needed to be massaged to reconnect with the pins. Use your old battery as an example for how the cable should sit in the empty space.

    Joe Ponce -

In my case, the replacement battery cable was quite stiff. In order to properly connect it to the logic board, BEFORE screwing the battery into the board, I carefully bent the cable and I connected it to the board. AFTER connecting the cable, carefully move the part of the batter closest to the logic board into place, and take care of those screws first.

    Chris 1000 -

Followed the instructions and everything went smoothly. Less than 20 minutes later everything assembled and my MacBook Air working very well.

    Thanks

    Luis Lopes -

Two of the battery cells were “blown up” in my laptop. We simply removed it with these instructions and now it’s working again, when plugged in only, of course.

    bob -

As with Chris 1000, the replacement battery cable is stiff. First position the battery loosely into it's slot, then align the cable connector over the pins & press gently but firmly to seat the connector. Secondly, seat the battery to line up with all of it's screw fasteners for the reassembly.

    Steve G -

Instructions did not mention the plastic film on top of the battery. Similar to a peel away film on a new phone. But it had screws holes in it and does not peel away as easily as a phone Peels away from edge easily enough but had a little "pull" to it over the cells. For now I left it. Quick google searches did not clarify the issue. If anyone can confirm I should pull it off I'll open it up again and remove. The install is easy.

    Eric Strausser -

I think I saw a note that said to leave it. But side-note, i'm glad to see someone replacing the battery more recently, as I just purchased myself a new macbook but my son asked if we can replace the battery and I honestly didn't even realize that it was possible for some reason. I think for the minimal cost involved and the fact that my 2011 still works flawlessly he'll enjoy it for a few more years to come as well. I hope the new ones are made as well quality wise!!

Arrived with 52% charge, capacity 4593 mAh of 4680 mAh. 98% health, manufacture date of the iFixit replacement battery is Feb 4 2012 (2.9 years), with 0 charge cycles. My order arrived extremely fast, and replacing the battery itself was easier than expected. Overall speed of my MBA seems to have improved somewhat as well. Despite my MBA mid-11 being almost 3.5 years old, the internals, fan included, were all fairly free from dust. So far, so good.

andreaspall -

I removed a battery pack from a mid-2011 MBA. Two of the lithium polymer cells had expanded so much that the upper case was bulging out about 0.5cm. The bulge un-bulged itself as soon as I loosened the screws on the lower case. There doesn't seem to be any significant damage to the hardware. Pretty wild. Also, despite this repair being listed as "Difficulty: Moderate", it's about the easiest thing you can do that involves opening the bottom cover.

THIS IS FANTASTIC!! I ordered it on a Thursday & received it on a Saturday! Came very protected in the box. It took me only 40 min to replace the battery & these instructions were excellent to follow! I highly recommend!

tiffmariepaul -

Very easy, and I normally have little patience for this sort of task. Took me about 20 minutes. Replacement battery was 90% charged and has 101% (!?) health.

craig -

I would like to agree: the difficulty is even less than easy

Leona Eden -

Very quick and easy to change the battery. Purchased the three tools needed from iFixit and they were perfect. The battery was 75% charged. I could not be happier!

Robert Baker -

Took me less than 10 minutes to complete. Computer rebooted as soon as put the MagSafe connector. I had to force a synchronization of the date/hour in Preferences to get it up-to-date (I guess the system would have done automatically a little bit later).

The battery came from iFixit. Battery stats, as shown by Battery health https://fiplab.com/apps/battery-health-f... show now:

Original max: 4680 mAh, Current Max: 4758mAh; Health: 102%, OS X Health Status: Good

The battery came is reported to be 3 years old(!) and came at about 80% charge

Instructions are very clear!

Jean Wallemacq -

When installing the battery, the battery cable seemed a little long. It's not, but don't be too tentative about bending the cable so it goes down into the well. All considered the replacement went very smoothly and was done within about 15min. The instructions were very clear.

Alan Kingstone -

A bientôt. Rodolphe

Rodolphe GAUFRETEAU -

I it took me less than 15 minutes to complete; the special tools and great instructions made changing my battery a snap; I did have to press one part of the battery plastic (near the fan) to get the battery to lay down flat, also I had to re-position / bend the connector cable to get it to line up and connect properly; it sure was a relief to see my laptop booted up with a 96% battery life .

Rod Fugler -

There are adhesive transparent plastic covers over the 6 lithium polymer cells on the new battery. Are they supposed to be removed or are they there for protection?

Mike Heath -

Response received from ifixit costumer support. Feel free to ask yourself though. "Those plastic tabs can be removed and it is recommended as leaving them on will make your battery slightly hotter. They do come off irregularly and may leave more or less residue but the aesthetics are not too important as it will be residing in your device."

Tim McCormick -

Yes - it's very strange; I looked up this fix about two days ago and found this article, except it had a caveat and accompanying photo saying that if your replacement battery arrives with thin film over the cells, leave it on there. Now I look at this article for both the 11" and 13" mid-2011 MBA and find no mention of the film in either. What the...?? 🤔

Ian D. -

How do I get the battery delivered to me in Nigeria? Can anybody help?

Akin Wande -

Very easy, step by step directions. Thank you

yvedjones -

I have been thinking about doing this repair myself for awhile now, and after I called my local Apple store and they told me that I can't even have them do it because they don't make/manufacture/sell this battery anymore, that decided for me. It arrived about 78% charged, and so far i have not noticed any problems with it. I didn't even need to use the guide because it was that simple to do.

Kole Overby -

Yes, often they won't even bother making that much of an excuse, but will tell you flat-out that they just stop supporting products after X amount of time. Planned, enforced obsolescence that Apple wishes would lead inexorably to the purchase of new products.

Enter iFixIt. 😉

Ian D. -

My MacBook Air 11” Mid 2011 is now “Vintage” and the Apple Store refused to help me despite an expanding battery that was causing a big bubble on the keyboard, making the keyboard no longer function. They wouldn’t even remove the battery that was damaging my computer! I went to iFixit and bought the P5 pentalobe tool and a new battery and followed these steps. Battery Replacement was easy and now I have a brand new battery in a computer that Apple told me was only good as scrap.

Matthew Bonhage -

How did you fix the bubble on the keyboard? I have the same problem

Max Gordon -

I am not sure where these batteries come from but I did the above replacement with a new battery and even the new one only keeps a charge for 1.5 hrs not the 9-12 Apple guarantees with tier computers?

Joseph A P -

Same issue here: ‘new’ battery lasts a mere 1.5 hrs. Does it mean it is faulty? Do we send it back for another replacement?

Dylan Alling -

Same issue here, ‘new’ battery lasts a mere 1.5 hrs. Surely this is not how ifixit intended this to work. Do we need to send it back to receive a proper replacement? What should we do next?

Dylan Alling -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejwRqM3f... On youtube there is a video showing how to install the battery, including how to calibrate the battery to get the most out of it.

Wandadiane Brooks -

Great! Thank you. I’d like to use this vintage MacBook Air forever!

Akira -

Used the ifixit kit and instructions for battery change for macbook air 2011. Went smoothly! next step, im have some pressurized air nearby. so dusty!!!

Christina -

Replacing my MBA battery was a 15 minute exercise with these splendid instructions and the iFixIt Electronics tool kit!

Thank you!

Barbara Buckley -

This is extremely easy with the right tools. I bought a grounding strap to use when I was doing the repair.

Graham Giller -

What is the proper way / environmentally correct way to get rid of the replaced battery?

Samuel Prokop -

The battery connector wire was a bit too long. I had to bend it into an s-shape but got it to work.

skrolikowski -

I changed the battery (Ifixit) last April and everything worked fine since now. The system does not see the battery any more. Do you think I can do something?

Leonardo Capodarte -

Very fast delivery from fixit.com, very easy to change it (20 minutes), battery 5 months old and good, tools ok, very clear instructions. Thanks a lot

maurizio.salvarani -

Weird glitch…I replaced the battery exactly according to instructions but each time I use it, when it gets down to about 60% charge left, it suddenly dives to 7% in a matter of seconds. Now it goes from almost 100% to 7% to nothing in a matter of about two minutes. Please IFIXIT, tell me what to do.

Gregory R. Nickles -

@gregory R

I am now having the same problem with my battery install that was very successful and working a week ago. No response yet from ifixit. I think thier battery was bad or it has messed up the battery software in the macbook air. Not very happy or satisfied at this point as my mac is no longer functonal th enew battery battery will no longer hold charge at all. I am very sorry I disposed of the original too quickly now. 80% charge is better than none.

Jim Lukens -

Thankfully Ifixit has responded and is very helpful and is issuing me a new battery to replace the one that is not working. I will get it a week or so and try again. fingers crossed.

Jim Lukens -

So I ended up with another vendor battery but even it has issues. Apple Store said this age mac air is beyond the range of their diagnostic tools and its about finding a high quality battery vs anything being wrong with the mac itself software/hardware all of the presenting issues are low battery quality related. Apparently battery quality is not the best across all manufacturers. Take that for what its worth but its what I heard.

Apple store agreed even the latest MacAir is not much faster/better because processor is still very similar, Storage / RAM are the largest changes so its hard to justify new Mac cost. They actually said if I could nurse battery as is and try others if they fail is probably the best way to address. It works fine charges to 100, counts cycles, but cuts out randomly under 20%. I still get good 4 hours use which is fine for me.

Ifixit has been extremely helpful and has offered to refund me so I have been happy with Ifixit and this guide was fully correct and will continue to use ifixit.

Jim Lukens -

How old are the current batteries being shipped in this kit?

wsanders -

Simple fix and done within 15 minutes. Power connector is slightly different than picture. Only need to slide out connector versus using spudger to pry up.

Will Shelhamer -

I used a battery from 2-power. Couple of comments in case it helps anyone:

- The battery looks identical to one I got from NewerTech, I suspect they are all manufactured in the same place. They have a habit of sticking the serial no sticker at the bottom, right where the trackpad is - my advice, move this - the tolerances are too fine and I had no end of problems until I did this.

- The 2-power battery came at 0% charge! This is not good for the cell chemistry and my suspicion is that because these laptops are now pretty old people are using up old stock that has been around a while. This means that the battery life will never be as good as the original. My NewerTech battery was pretty poor if I am honest, despite paying a premium price. We will see what the 2-power battery is like. YMMV

Andy Piper -

Actually the 2-power battery was charged, just that the one it was replacing was not. After resetting SMC and callibrating I get 3hrs45 on normal use and 3hrs movie watching.

Andy Piper -

Update: My battery from Jan 2016 lasted about 3 1/2 years. Now I’m debating putting in another since I rarely use it. (11” mid 2011 Air)

Robert Baker -

I purchased the kit from iFixit and everything has gone smoothly (so far - still on first charge!) on my mid-2013 11” Macbook Air. The new battery shows a manufacture date of Aug 2019 (3 months ago), was charged already to about 80% and shows “Full Charge Capacity (mAh) of 5045”. I concur with another comment that during re-install the connector has to be bent a bit to fit, but that was straight-forward – I did it before screwing the battery back in.

Overall this kit cost $30-50 more than something claiming to be the same from Amazon, but I didn’t want the hassle of a dud battery OR cheap tools that might might strip the many screws on a 6 year old laptop that has never been opened.

I concur with the Medium rating (mostly due to the tiny screws and how easily they could be stripped or lost). However, if you’re comfortable unscrewing electronics and take your time and don’t force anything, it will be hassle-free and Easy.

Many thanks iFixit team!

Michael Mee -

Replaced battery because of significant bulge causing erratic track pad behaviour and must say this guide was perfect.

collinsmikep -

Maximilian Dudik -

It is fairly simple and I had no trouble in doing the replacement, until the final check :( The battery shows in the system information, but does not charge (*battery is not charging* message). I disconnected the battery many times and connected it back again (at least three times)… np way to get it charging. I reset the SMC and PRA : still nothing.

Do you know any reason why this happens ?

Is it possible to add photos to the tutorial showing the connector and the socket in great details, please ?

J.-M. Verniajou -

When it came time to screw the new battery in, I noticed that it didn’t *quite* align perfectly. The 55 Wh battery I got off Amazon seems to be less than 1 mm off in thickness/size but it did screw down and the back did go on without difficulty so we’ll see if that causes issue, but this guide really helped me. I had no idea it would be so easy! Though… my MacBook Air 4,2 (mid-2011) had a slightly different layout of chips than the pictures, and I had no need for the spudger. Instead there was an easy-to-pull tab. Not complaining, just weird.

Matthew M -

MERCI !

I accidentally lost the screws that hold the battery in place. Is it possible to go without them?

James Nobles -

+1 for “less than easy” - right up there with the early MacBook Pro battery replacement.

Will -

jpmoll -

I would avoid this battery… the battery swelled after last than a year, damaging the frame of my MBA!

Jeffrey Li -

eek, I hope this doesn’t happen to me!!!

alexander matthews -

Replaced the battery to provide my daughter with a cheap laptop for school work. Very easy, will see how long it lasts. But very happy to breathe new life in my good old Air!

Willem Redert -

This is the most ridiculously easy “non-replaceable” battery replacement I have done in 20 years. Compared to any iPhone, this was cake. Took me about 10 minutes, taking my time and being very careful. I guess it’s appropriate to mark it as “moderate” difficulty for those total klutzes out there who aren’t good with tiny screws and could potentially strip threads or round off the heads… or even damage the ribbon cable maybe. Mid2011MBA

My battery was at 39% when received. I didn’t look for a date of manufacture.

alexander matthews -

Just replaced mine as well. It was fast and easy. The first screw I took off went missing and I couldn’t find it. I decided to continue and worry about it later. Once I finished and tried to plug the MacBook to the power I noticed it doesn’t fit. Then I realize the screw was stuck at the MagSafe connector due to the magnet so keep that in mind. once you take off the screw which is next to the power plug hold it tightly.

yakirmanz -

Great and simple guide, very helpful and informative.

dorismel -

showed 5052 mah after installation. Not sure whether it remains like this after the calibration (charging fully + 2h on top, then using it to 0% & charging back), but so far looks amazing. has recognized it as an iFixit battery. I bought just the battery with no installation kit that comes with it for an additional cost and ordered a basic tools kit that they sell via the website (i think that's a way better deal rather than just a few tools that you can buy on top of the battery). So far so good. The installation is easy. One recommendation - connect your battery to the plug before screwing it, coz if you do vice versa, you won't able to connect it.
