    • Sieben 3 mm Kreuzschlitzschrauben

    • Drei 13,5 mm Kreuzschlitzschrauben

May be helpful to have more distinct colors to identify the different screws.

Question: why do you remove the battery? According to Apple's official manual, this is not required (not for the mid-2009 and not for the mid-2010 15-inch MacBook Pro) - see pages 37 ff:

    I'm interested by your experience.

Did you have removed the optical drive without removing the battery ?

I'm just in this step now and if it is possible I would proceed like you because removing the battery void the warranty (and there is a sticker).

    Thanks in advance.

Looks like my note to step 3 appears on all repair guides that have the same step. I meant that in the context of the hard drive replacement only.

Did you have removed the optical drive without removing the battery ?

I haven't yet done anything, waiting for my MacBook Pro 15 inch mid-2010 to arrive.

    alexkli -

I missed the notes and went ahead and purchased the 5 point driver for the battery before I realized it was not necessary.

I've edited the repair guide to remove the section on the battery, but I don't have the points to approve the changes.

    Chris Davis -

Please note - the step about removing the battery is part of a pre-requisite guide, that is used for many of the guides, most that do require removal of the battery. Also, working inside a disassembled laptop with the battery still connected risks damaging/shorting out very expensive parts.

    Eric Essen -

Absolutely. To be clear -- ALL of the above discussion is ONLY in reference to replacing the hard drive.

    Chris Davis -

I replaced a hard drive in a MacBook Pro of an earlier model than this without removing the battery. The hard drive wasn't right. It only worked at about half speed, and I had to replace it once more. The second time I removed the battery and all went well. The recommendation by the iFixit staff to remove the battery before working on electronic equipment is a good one.

What is the size of those screws... I have rounded off the socket on mine and would like to replace them.

    Ghatothkach Yadav -

I measured the screw size, using a micrometer, its about 1.523mm in diameter and 3.186mm in length. Not sure what screw size that is. They are not easily available I guess, unless someone is selling used ones on ebay

Removing the battery is not necessary for the hard drive removal/replacement procedures.

My T6 (appears to be same screw driver you have - $6 on amazon for 20piece set) did NOT fit int he battery screws...not sure if I had the wrong screws or what, but I went ahead w/o battery steps and it was pretty easy.

    Anthony Ettinger -

I also noticed that the new SDD (from crucial) didn't have the 4 screws, so I had to move those off the old HD and onto the new one.

    Anthony Ettinger -

Just had the same issue: T6 does not fit the battery screws ;-( ... but with a little bit more preassure it was possible to remove the screws.

    Excellent guide

Just installed a new battery from Anker. This tutorial was very helpful to me. iFixit was out of stock on the battery I needed, or I would have ordered from you.

Anker did include the special 5 prong tiny screwdriver needed.

I bought and installed the ifixit.com battery for my Mid 2009 15 inch MacBook Pro and it was easy and is working great. Much better than the dying battery it had. It was very easy. I did purchase the required tools which made it simple. Thanks.

1tom2go -

Ordered the battery from iFixit, forgot to order the Pentalobe screwdriver. Nevermind, if you only do that stuff once (as I expect after 6 years with one battery) - don't spend the money on special equipment that cannot be used for anything else :)

Opening the macbook is easy (I have done that before to exchange the superdrive with a larger harddisk and the original HD with an SSD drive, and a couple of times to clean the fans), but the 3 screws on the battery are a pain.

What did the job for me: an old mini-flathead-screwdriver (approx. 2mm? - just slightly larger than the pentalobe) and a file. As none of my other screwdrivers would work with the ....pentalobes, i filed down the flathead (-)screwdriver so that it could get hold in 2 of the lobes - which did let me open and close these screws without a problem. My screws were not closed very tight though - if they are there is probably no way around the right tool.

Hello , I just replaced the battery on my macbook pro 15 inch 2009. Original battery was dead, would not even start without being plugged in.

I replaced the battery myself with one from amazon. Lizone is the brand. Laptop powers on now without being plugged in but after I enter my password it turns off, right after the login screen. Doesnt matter if its plugged in or not. I can access the login screen and thats it. When I removed the battery the laptop starts normal and I can get past the login screen and into el capitan.

I reseted SMC and PRAM multiple times. Is it a faulty battery ? What can I try?

Just finished using this guide to replace my mid 2009 MacBook Pro battery. Used a NUPOWER battery from OWC. Change went smoothly and I'll come back in a few days to update how it's working

Morgan -

Used this guide to install an Anker battery (https://www.anker.com/products/A6506012) and it went smoothly. The Anker product includes the necessary screw drivers, a nice plus if you don't already have them.

This was an easy fix! I got the tool for the Pain In The A$$ (or just severely misunderstood) screws. You might want to check out resetting the SMC before you start. Some instructions suggest it's best done while the battery is disconnected. The charge indicator seems wonky, and I suspect it's the SMC. The method to reset without the battery disconnected seems... suspect.

Just replaced the original battery from my MBP mid-2009! iFixit's instructions invaluable as always, went like a dream once I had sourced a pentalobe screwdriver… Remains to be seen whether the new battery is calibrated OK or whether I need to rest the SMC.

Thank you. Instructions very clear

I Just replaced my old battery with the one from iFixit, was super easy with the iFixit instructions. The new battery was at 50% charged out of the box, and is now charged to 100%, took about 2 hours.

I have one question now. Are there any special instructions for the first charging cycle of a new battery? I ask this because I just remembered that on old Macbooks one had to do some some kind of "calibration" for maximal battery life, which involved something like charging the new battery to 100% and then letting it discharge down to 0%. Do we still have to do it on these new models?

Thanks for any inputs,

~a.

I'm 75 computer stupid but ordered your battery with tools, followed your instructions in 10 minutes the battery was installed (hey I'm slow as well) working on the breakfast table. In fact it is so easy I could almost have done it just be looking at it and taking a screw out at a time. The hard part was disconnecting the cable, but thanks to my Swiss Army knife it turned out easier. BUT putting the new one in was super simple UNTIL I attempted to reconnect the battery connector cable to the computer. Finally I easied loose the stick on part of hte cable beneath the battery (super gently) and using 90 degree needle nosed pliers in closed position beneath the battery connecter end of the cable to steady it was able to gently reinsert into it's socket. The rest was a beeze EXCEPT for the far right screw hole of the battery was every so slightly off but I managed to calm myself down and got that tiny little screw to screw into the whole. DO THIS & SAVE A TON OF MONEY! DBW#86

please where can i order a replacement battery?

Just installed my new battery following the instructions above. Everything went according to instructions.

Next step, SSD replacement.

Fatto!!! Grazie.

Just did my first (successful?) home electronics repair! I LOVE my new toolkit (pro with magnet board) and the tools were just a pleasure to use. I also discovered that my computer, which I received used from a family member, has been worked on before! Someone had replaced the pentalobes on the batter with a single torx. Interesting…

Can’t wait to try another one!

Danni -

Used this guide and my MacBook is back to life! However I have noticed that the time it takes to charge the battery is very long. Seems like it would take 6 hours or more to completely charge.

Matthew Longo -

Easy breezy with the instructions provided above :)

Lindsay Clark -

This is the kind of repair I would never try without a repair guide like this one to rely on -- the computer is just too expensive and mistakes are just too easy to make on the first try.

It takes care to get the old battery disconnected and the new one attached, given the tight quarters inside the computer's case & the delicacy of the connector & cable relative to the battery's weight; following the instructions here enabled me to do it smoothly. By now I've replaced the battery twice (the last time was five years ago), & both times it came back up working great.

Excellent guide. If I can do it, you can too! Have a good clean work area, a place for your screws (I put mine in Altoid & Sucrets tins labeled with marker on masking tape for each step), & make sure you have a little spare time so you can work in a relaxed way. If you film your work for a time-lapse video, and you have it lit perfectly so everything that's happening is easy to see, don't erase your video by accident like I did!
