Background and Identification

The 2004-2008 F-150 truck was introduced in January 2003 for the 2004 model year as the redesigned eleventh generation of the F-150 lineup. The Ford F-Series is a sequence of full-size pickup trucks manufactured by Ford, an American automaker, since 1948. F-Series trucks are placed above the Ford Ranger in size. Beginning in 1999, the F-Series included the Super Duty series, marketed as heavy-duty pickup trucks, medium-duty trucks, and chassis cab trucks. The F-Series includes the F-150 pickup truck, F-250 through F-450 pickup trucks, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty chassis cabs, and F-650 and F-750 Super Duty Class 6-8 trucks.

In 2004, Ford redesigned the F-150 using the new Ford P2 platform. The side windows also changed to a Kenworth "Daylight Door" and Ford Super Duty-like appearance. Initially, only Ford's 4.6 liter Triton or new three-valve 5.4 Liter Triton V8 engines with four-speed automatic transmissions were available. In 2005, Ford's 4.2 liter Essex V6 and a manual transmission became standard on base F-150 trucks after the 2004 model year.

2004-2008 F-150 models were sold in XL, STX, XLT, FX4, and Lariat trim levels. The base XL level included cloth upholstery, a bench seat, a 4.2-liter V6 engine, manual transmission, manual windows and mirrors, and a black grille. The STX level added body-color bumpers, a front seat center armrest, and a body-color grille. The XLT trim level added chrome front and rear step bumpers, a black honeycomb grille, keyless entry, speed control, power windows with locks, automatic headlamps, and a color-coordinated steering wheel. The FX4 trim level added a 5.4-liter Triton V8 engine, FX5 off-road decals, monotone body-color bumpers, off-road shocks, fog lamps, and a black leather-wrapped steering wheel. The top-end Lariat trim level included beige bumpers and two-tone paint, heated mirrors with turn signals, a power driver’s seat, leather-trimmed seats, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and automatic temperature control.

This generation F-150 received top safety ratings (5 stars) from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in frontal collisions. The truck received a “Good” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s frontal-offset test, and was also named a “Best Pick.”
