Background and Identification

The Toyota Corolla is a line of compact and subcompact automobiles produced by Toyota, a Japanese automaker. The Corolla line was introduced in 1966 and became the world’s best-selling car by 1974 and has been in the world’s top-selling cars since then.

The eleventh generation of the Corolla (E160 for Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Bangladesh, Singapore, and Sri Lanka) was released in 2012. The larger E170/E180 variants were released for all other international markets in 2013. In Japan, the sedan is called the Corolla Axio while the wagon variant is named the Corolla Fielder. The E160 narrow model was sold exclusively in Japan to comply with Japanese governmental regulations regarding engine displacement and exterior dimensions. The E170/E180 was derived from the Toyota New MC platform, while the E160 was based on Toyota’s B platform.

The 2012-2018 Corolla models are considered compact cars and were sold as four-door sedans or 5-door station wagons. Generally, the station wagon versions were only sold in Japan and Hong Kong. In 2017, Toyota announced the Corolla iM, a hatchback version of the Corolla in the United States. These vehicles include a front-engine layout with either front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive.

Toyota vehicles in the Americas can be identified by the Toyota emblem, which depicts three overlapping ellipses. Corolla vehicles also include an emblem with the name “Corolla” in capital letters.
