Background and Identification
The D-Link DNS-323 is a two-bay network storage enclosure that is designed as a comprehensive solution for network storage. The D-Link DNS-323 is a type of Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device with a SATA I/II drive interface. A Network-Attached Storage device is a file-level (as opposed to block-level storage) computer data storage server that is connected to a computer network. The device provides data access to a group of clients and is specialized for serving files either by its hardware, software, or configuration. NAS systems are often produced as computer appliances produced with specialized purposes. Network-attached storage systems remove the responsibility of file serving from other servers on the network.
The device features a 3.5-inch drive form factor and a maximum storage capacity of 4 TB. It includes a Gigabyte Ethernet network interface and one USB port for storage backup, printer sharing, or UPS monitoring. The D-Link DNS-323 includes either a RAID 0/1 or standard multiple-drive configuration. It can handle a maximum of 64 user accounts and includes group account management capabilities. It can support up to 45 managed/shared folders and up to 10 concurrent connections via FTP. Via Samba, the drive can support up to 64 concurrent connections. Users can schedule backups from their personal computer to the NAS device and also schedule local backups.
According to a review of the D-Link DNS-323 from CNet, the device has a compact design and is very easy to set up with an intuitive Web Interface and a fast write speed. However, the drive bays’ cover comes off too easily and the device does not support hard drives in FAT32 or NTFS format. Additionally, the drive bays only hold drives of regular thickness.
