Background and Identification
The Gaggia Classic is one of the oldest espresso machines on the market today. It has gone through several redesigns. Users can identify which variation of the Gaggia Classic that they have by the model number. All Gaggia Classic machines have a model number that is formatted like this: RI9303/##. The first six characters before the slash are the same for all Gaggia Classic machines, but the last two indicate which version of the machine it is- the first version will have model number RI9303/01, for example, while later models will have 02, 03, and so on.
The Gaggia Classic is a manual espresso machine. Manual machines require a little more work from the user, but they usually offer better quality because the user can control the brewing time. Brewing time often varies by cup of espresso, so manual machines are useful in making sure that each espresso is made well. Manual machines like this one are popular in Europe, because straight espresso is a more common beverage there.
