Background and Identification

Airsoft guns are replica toy guns used for airsoft sports. Airsoft guns are designed to shoot non-metallic spherical projectiles often called “BBs.” “BBs” are generally made of plastic or biodegradable resin materials. Airsoft guns are categorized into two groups by their mechanism for pellet propulsion: mechanical, or pneumatic. Mechanical airsoft guns use a coil spring-loaded piston air pump that is either automatically cycled by a battery-powered electric motor gearbox or manually cocked. Pneumatic airsoft guns operate by the valve-controlled release of refilled bottled gas such as compressed propane or carbon dioxide canisters. Pneumatic airsoft guns powered by carbon dioxide canisters are called GBB guns (gas blowback).

For gas blowback (GBB) guns, the magazines typically include the internal canister required to operate the gun as well as the BBs. The BB pellets are fed into the airsoft gun using a spring, and the gas is loaded into a separate chamber for propulsion. Once the trigger-pull releases, the prefilled bottled gas propels the pellet and generates a blowback. This blowback simulates recoil and cyclically loads the next shot. Many gas magazines for airsoft guns are heavy and simulate the real weight of their firearm counterparts.

Gas blowback guns allow for muscle memory training, correct weapon manipulation drills, stress inoculation, and force-on-force simulations for a lower cost than real firearms.
