Harman Kardon Onxy Studio 5 Teardown
Background and Identification
Harman Kardon speakers are manufactured by Harman Kardon or harman/kardon, a division of Samsung. Harman Kardon is known for manufacturing consumer audio equipment. The company was started in 1953 by Sidney Harman and Bernard Kardon. It is based in Stamford, Connecticut. Though designs have since changed, early equipment could be identified by a copper plated chassis with a copper and black color scheme for panels and enclosures. Harman Kardon bought the speaker company JBL in 1969.
In 2000, the company partnered with Apple to create the multimedia speakers called SoundSticks. Multiple iterations have been released since. This year, 2020, the company released the SoundSticks 4 at CES. The new version features two speakers and a subwoofer. It has a rippled surface design. The sound it produces is a “rich bass and clear vibrant sound” according to Harman.com.
They have also worked with car companies to provide speakers for brands like Audi, BMW, Land Rover and many more. And they have provided computer speakers for companies such as ASUS, certain models of Toshiba, Acer, and Apple iMacs.
In 2017, they released a smart speaker called the Invoke. It is powered by Cortana, a Microsoft virtual assistant. And in 2018, they announced the Citation 500, another smart speaker, this time powered by Google.
