Background and Identification
The Lenovo ThinkPad W520 is a 15-inch laptop marketed as a “mobile workstation.“ The W520, released in March 2011, is a successor to the W510 from the previous year. Lenovo provided a large number of configuration options and lots of upgradeability, so fixers rejoice. The W520 uses an Intel i7 processor with its integrated HD 3000 graphics. Under a heavier load, the computer can switch over to an Nvidia Quadro 1000M or 2000M (based on configuration) for graphics.
The laptop features a primary 2.5-inch hard drive bay as well as an optical drive, but the optical drive can be replaced with a second hard drive or SSD using an adapter. You can also install an mSATA SSD in a slot located under the keyboard. The machine has four memory slots which can support up to 32 GB of RAM in total. The ports on this laptop include USB, VGA, DisplayPort, FireWire, Ethernet, and 3.5 mm audio.
You can identify this laptop by looking for the word “W520“ just below the screen near the right hinge. You can find the serial number on a sticker on the bottom of the device.
