Die Provinz besteht aus den Departements Bagré, Bané, Béguédo, Bissiga, Bittou, Boussouma, Garango, Komtoèga, Niaogho, Tenkodogo, Zabré, Zoaga und Zonsé. Der Name Boulgou stammt vom nahe Garango gelegenen Berg. Bewohner der Provinz sind hauptsächlich Bissa und Mossi.
