Joseph Priestley

Joseph Priestley (* 13. März^jul. / 24. März 1733^greg. in Fieldhead/Birstall bei Leeds, England; † 25. Januar^jul. / 6. Februar 1804^greg. in Northumberland County (Pennsylvania), USA) war ein englisch-US-amerikanischer Theologe des Unitarismus, Pfarrer, Philosoph, Chemiker und Physiker. Priestley beschrieb 1774 erstmals die Darstellung und Wirkung des von ihm entdeckten Sauerstoffs und 1772 des von ihm entdeckten Lachgases (N₂O, Stickoxydul). Er entdeckte Darstellungsmöglichkeiten für zahlreiche weitere Gase: Stickstoffdioxid, Kohlenstoffmonoxid, Chlorwasserstoff, Ammoniak, Schwefelwasserstoff, Schwefeldioxid, Siliziumtetrafluorid.
