Das Karbon ist in der Erdgeschichte das fünfte chronostratigraphische System bzw. die fünfte geochronologische Periode des Paläozoikums. Das Karbon begann vor etwa 358,9 Millionen Jahren und endete vor etwa 298,9 Millionen Jahren. Es wird vom Perm überlagert und vom Devon unterlagert.
