Since it runs in Manhattan on the main route under Lexington Avenue, it has the color code dark green. It stops at all stations (local) of the IRT Lexington Avenue Line and is therefore also referred to as Lexington Avenue Local. In the Bronx it stops at all stations (local) of the IRT Pelham Line and is therefore called Pelham Local.

In the Bronx, the 6 train terminates early at Parkchester station during morning and afternoon rush hours. Only the <6> Pelham Express line marked with the diamond symbol serves the entire route to Pelham Bay Park at these times of day.

The <6> Pelham Express trains run in the main traffic direction during rush hour, i.e. towards Manhattan in the morning and towards Pelham Bay in the afternoon. They only stop at select stations on the route in the southern part of the Bronx. In Manhattan, the express trains also stop at all stations as Lexington Avenue Local.

Jennifer Lopez named her debut album "On the 6" after this subway line.
