Background and Identification
The Fire (also called the Kindle Fire or Amazon Fire) is a line of tablet computers developed and marketed by Amazon.com. Kindle Fire tablets run on a custom version of Google’s Android operating system called the Fire OS. The Kindle Fire includes access to the Amazon Appstore, streaming movies and TV shows, and the Kindle Store for ebooks. As of October 2012, the Kindle Fire was the second top-selling tablet after the Apple iPad, with approximately seven million units sold.
Amazon released the original Kindle Fire in late 2011 as a low-cost media tablet. The multi-touch-enabled tablet features integration with all of Amazon's in-house services, including its cloud-based storage, music library, and streaming movies. The device boasts a 1 GHz dual-core processor, 512 MB of RAM, a 7" full-color display, and runs a custom operating system based on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).
The Kindle Fire HD was released in 2012, and the Kindle Fire HDX model was released in 2014. The name “Kindle” was dropped in 2014 when the fourth-generation Fire was introduced. The Fire 7 was released as the fifth-generation model in 2015 (called the Fire 7 because it features a 7-inch display. The Fire 7 name was continued from the sixth- through ninth-generation models.
Users can find their device model by sliding down the quick menu and tapping “Settings,” then clicking the “Device Options” button. Near the bottom of the “Device Options” page, users should see a “Device Model” heading with the Fire model and generation underneath.
