Background and Identification

The Puritan Bennett 840 Ventilator System is a critical care ventilator intended for acute and subacute care of infant, pediatric, and adult patients with respiratory failure or insufficiency in health care facilities. It is responsive to patients and offers superior comfort, delivering sensitive, precise breaths to critically ill patients. The Puritan Bennett 840 features Medtronic’s PAV+ software that better manages a patient’s work of breathing and supports more natural breathing compared to conventional mechanical ventilation.

The Puritan Bennett 840 was originally manufactured by Puritan-Bennett Aero Systems in 1998, when the company was sold to BE Aerospace. After many company ownership transitions, the Puritan Bennett brand became the property of Medtronic in 2015. Medtronic currently distributes the Puritan Bennett 840 which has undergone many software updates since 1998. It is important to ensure that your model has the most recent software updates since its software was recalled by the FDA in 2013 due to critical software issues. The recall was terminated in 2016 with the updated software.

The Puritan Bennett 840 can be distinguished from other Puritan Bennett models by its vertical rectangular DuelView LCD touchscreen and small rectangular alarm indicator. The alarm indicator is attached to the touchscreen at the upper right corner.
