Background and Identification

Synology, Inc. is a Taiwanese corporation that manufactures network-attached storage (NAS) appliances. Synology Inc. was founded in January 2000 and released its first complete NAS solution in 2004 (called the DiskStation DS-101). Synology’s line of network-attached storage devices is called the DiskStation for desktop models, FlashStation for all-flash models, and RackStation for rack-mount models. Synology’s products are localized in several languages and sold worldwide.

Synology’s primary product is the Synology DiskSystem Manager (DSM). The DSM is a Linux-based software package that serves as the operating system for the DiskStation and RackStation products. The DiskStation Manager integrates file sharing, centralized backup, RAID storage, multimedia streaming, virtual storage, and network video recording. Synology provides free mobile applications for its users, including support for iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, and Windows Phone.

The Synology DiskStation is the network-attached storage appliance designed to run on the Synology DSM operating system. The DiskStation is a tower embedded NAS appliance that ranges from one bay up to twelve bays within a single enclosure.

The Synology FlashStation is an all-flash version of the DiskStation. The Synology RackStation features the same abilities as the DiskStation but is enclosed in a 19-inch rack cage. Some of Synology’s rack models include redundant power supplies.

The Synology Router Manager (SRM) is derived from the DiskStation Manager. The RT1900ac Wi-Fi router comes without a modem, but users can connect an ADSL or cable modem on the device’s WAN port, or a range of 3G/4G modems on the USB port.
