Background and Identification

Produced by Lenovo, the fifth generation of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, is a high-end notebook. It was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2017. At 2.49 lb, the X1 Carbon is 8% smaller than previous generations. It is much more portable and has greater processing power, memory, and storage. Moreover, the X1 Carbon has maintained its 14” display, now Quad-HD, in a 13” chassis  or computer case, the metal frame that serves as the structural support for electronic components.

Positive aspects of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon include its long battery life, the vibrant and colorful display, its chassis, and its light weight. Negatives include its hefty price tag, the dim screen, and lacking audio.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th Generation laptops built before September 1, 2017—83,500 laptops sold in the US and Canada—were recalled. Reports found that an extraneous screw left in the laptop during manufacturing could damage one of the lithium batteries leading to a short out of one of the cells, causing rapid overheating and failure.

This product is no longer sold by Lenovo.
