Irland

Irland ([ˈɪʁlant], irisch Éire [ˈeːrʲə] anhören^ⓘ, englisch Ireland), auch als Republik Irland bekannt, ist ein Inselstaat in Westeuropa. Die offizielle Bezeichnung des Landes lautet Irland. Der Staat umfasst etwa fünf Sechstel der gleichnamigen Insel sowie eine Vielzahl kleinerer Inseln, welche ihr – überwiegend im Westen des Landes – vorgelagert sind. Die Republik Irland grenzt im Norden an Nordirland und damit an das Vereinigte Königreich. Im Osten liegt die Irische See, im Westen und Süden ist das Land vom Atlantik umgeben. Hauptstadt und größte Stadt Irlands ist Dublin, gelegen im östlichen Teil des Landes. In der Metropolregion Dublin lebt etwa ein Drittel der fünf Millionen Einwohner. Der größte Teil der Bevölkerung bekennt sich zum römisch-katholischen Glauben.

Das lange Zeit verarmte und daher von Auswanderung betroffene Irland hat sich inzwischen zu einer hochmodernen, in manchen Gegenden multikulturellen Industrie- und Dienstleistungsgesellschaft gewandelt. 2021 hatte Irland im weltweiten Vergleich das vierthöchste Bruttoinlandsprodukt pro Kopf (kaufkraftbereinigt) und das zweithöchste in Europa. 2019 wurde das Land von elf Millionen ausländischen Touristen besucht. Irland ist Mitglied der Europäischen Union.
