Background and Identification
The Toyota Corolla is a line of compact and subcompact automobiles produced by Toyota, a Japanese automaker. The Corolla line was introduced in 1966 and became the world’s best-selling car by 1974 and has been in the world’s top-selling cars since then. The tenth generation of the Corolla (also called the E140 or E150 line) was introduced in October 2006.
In Japan, the Corolla sedan was called the Corolla Axio, and the station wagon variant retained the Corolla Fielder name from previous generations. The E140 narrow model was sold exclusively in Japan to comply with Japanese governmental regulations regarding engine displacement and exterior dimensions. A wider E140 model was sold internationally. In Southeast Asia, India, and Taiwan, the E140 Corolla was called the Corolla Atlis.
The 2006-2013 Corolla Axio featured Toyota’s intelligent parking-assist system and a backup camera monitor. The Luxel model, the Corolla’s highest trim level, features ‘Dynamic Radar Cruise Control,’ Tiptronic transmission, Bluetooth, push-button start, and automatic climate control.
The international wide-body version of the tenth-generation Corolla has similar exterior styling to the Toyota Camry but maintains the Axio’s interior styling. The North American E140 Corolla retains the ASEAN-marketed Corolla Atlas styling and design rather than the Japanese Corolla Axio styling. In North America, only the sedan version of the E140 Corolla was sold.
Toyota vehicles in the Americas can be identified by the Toyota emblem, which depicts three overlapping ellipses. Corolla vehicles also include an emblem with the name “Corolla” in capital letters. 2006-2013 models also include a plaque that states the vehicle’s trim level, including XRS, LE, and XLE.
