Background and Identification

The Acer Chromebook was developed by Acer Inc, a Taiwanese multinational hardware and electronics corporation. They were one of the first to market and began selling them in 2011. The Chromebook is a device that runs a Linux-based Chrome OS as its operating system and most of the data and applications reside in the cloud instead of the machine. At first they were unfavorably compared to laptops running Windows based operating systems, however when the price was revealed to be lower the complaints ceased.

Acer’s first commercially available Chromebook was the Acer AC700. It began selling in 2011 via Amazon and Best Buy in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain. In Fall of 2012, a lower cost Acer Chromebook was released, the Acer C7.

In 2013, Acer Chromebook’s sales were being heavily driven by the educational market. According to Bloomberg news, Chromebooks represented 5–10 percent of the company's US shipments.

In 2015, Acer announced a big screen Chromebook would be available, the Acer Chromebook 15. It would have a 15.6 FHD screen. And in 2018, they announced their first Chromebook tablet would be released, the Chromebook Tab 10. It was geared towards the education market and came with a stylus. It also had a 9.7-inch display and 2048 x 1536 resolution.

As of 2020, TechRadar released a list of the best Chromebooks of the year and 5 of the 10 they reviewed were Acer Chromebooks. They included the Acer Chromebook R11, the Acer Chromebook 314, the Acer Chromebook Spin 311, the Acer Chromebook Spin 11, the Acer Chromebook 15 and the Acer Chromebook Spin 15.
