Background And Identification
The Astro A40 TR Plus Mixamp M80, manufactured by Astro Gaming, is a bundle of a headset (Astro A40 TR) and an attachable amp (Mixamp M80) used to increase the stereo sound quality for the Xbox One. It does not support surround sound and it is not bluetooth capable. The Mixamp M80 is only compatible with the Xbox One controller. The Astro A40 TR’s speakers are compatible with anything that has a 3.5mm TRS or TRRS port, but the microphone will only work if the port supports a CTIA TRRS connection.
The headset comes in many colors and is meant to be customizable, making it difficult to identify but easier to repair. The model number is on the speaker tags which are designed to be swapped out. If you no longer have the original speaker tags, you will need to check your headband for branding. It should say Astro along your headband adjusters and you should be able to see thick wires through the headband as well. If your wires are not black, you either have a customized headset or you have the Astro A50. The headset is significantly different from previous versions due to the headband adjusters and visible wires, but it is very close to the newer A50 version.
The Mixamp M80 is fairly easy to identify. Unlike other Mixamps by the manufacturer, this cannot be used with multiple devices as the connector at the top will only fit into an Xbox One controller. The only comparable Mixamp is the M60 and the M80 has a volume wheel at the bottom while the M60 does not.
The Astro A40 TR Plus Mixamp M80 was released in 2013. This headset shares some resemblance to its predecessor, the A10 Plus MixAmp M60, but upgrades have been made:
