Background

The DJI Mavic is a series of quadcopter drones for commercial and personal aerial videography and photography use. Mavic drones are produced by DJI, a Chinese technology company. The Mavic Mini was introduced in October 2019 as a replacement for the discontinued DJI Spark and marketed as a beginner camera drone.

The Mini’s camera is on a three-axis gimbal and features a 12-megapixel sensor capable of recording 2.7K video at 30fps. The Mavic Mini shares some design characteristics with the Mavic Pro and Mavic 2 series drones, though the Mini is especially small and portable. The Mini weighs only 249 grams (8.8 ounces), so it bypasses registration regulations in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. In Japan, an even lighter model was released with a battery weighing 50 grams (1.8 ounces) less than the original Mini model to bypass Japan’s 200-gram registration regulations. The Mini has a range of approximately 4 kilometers, though most countries (including the United States) require line-of-sight to any unmanned aerial vehicle, regardless of the drone’s range.

A review of the Mavic Mini by WIRED appreciated the drone’s small size, three-axis stabilization, and nearly 30-minute flying time. The drone does not need to be registered with the FAA because of its weight but is so small that it can be hard to track in the sky. FAA regulations state that drone pilots must always be able to visually track UAVs, regardless of whether or not the drone is registered.

Identification

The Mavic Mini can be distinguished by other DJI drones by its small size and weight (unfolded with propeller dimensions of 245×290×55 mm (L×W×H)). It also includes the name “Mavic Mini” printed in capital letters on the side of the device.
