Background and Identification

The Dell Latitude E5550 is a business laptop with a 15-inch screen. It was originally released in late 2014 with a 4th-generation Intel processor inside. In early 2015, Dell gave the laptop a small update adding 5th-generation Intel processors and increasing the maximum memory capacity. The exterior of the laptop is black (the definitive color of a serious business laptop) and the lid has a rubberized texture. The middle of the keyboard sports a blue and black trackpoint with buttons above the trackpad that you can press with your thumbs while using the nub for cursor movement.

Removing the bottom cover of the E5550 requires loosening six screws and gives you access to all the components inside. The early versions with 4th-gen. processors can accept up to 8 GB of memory in the two upgradeable slots, whereas the later 5th-generation-equipped models can take up to 16 GB. The standard 2.5-inch drive bay nearby can accept either a SATA hard drive or SSD. Likewise, the battery is removable and held down with a few screws (although reviewers did point out that the battery is somewhat harder to remove than on previous models which had an externally removable battery).

You can identify this laptop by looking at the bottom left corner of the keyboard where Dell has kindly printed the model name “Latitude E5550.” If you need the service tag or service code (a.k.a. Dell’s serial number) it will be located on a sticker on the bottom of the device. If you want to find out whether your laptop has a 4th- or 5th-generation processor, you can find the exact processor model as shown in this How-To-Geek guide for Windows or using the “lscpu” command on Linux.
