Background and Identification

Chevrolet (commonly called Chevy and formally the Chevrolet Division of General Motors Company) is an automobile division of General Motors, an American automaker. Chevrolet sells a wide range of automobiles, including subcompact automobiles like the Chevrolet Aveo, to sports cars like the Chevrolet Corvette, to mid-size trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado.

Founded in 1911 by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant, Chevrolet (or Chevy) is an American manufacturer of all types of passenger and fleet vehicles. Chevrolet was a Swiss race car driver and an automotive engineer, while Durant was an ousted General Motors founder. Chevrolet was acquired by General Motors in 1918 and served to compete directly with Ford's Model T. Chevrolet became the top-selling division in the General Motors family and overtook Ford as the top-selling car brand in the United States by 1929. To this day, Chevrolet and Ford are considered rivals in the domestic car market.

Chevrolet vehicles trucks include the Chevrolet emblem, which is called a “bowtie” logo, has the shape of a cross with elongated arms and a shorter body. The bowtie logo was introduced by Durant in 1913 and may have been inspired by a wallpaper design in a French hotel that he saw in his travels. The logo was first used in 1914 on the H series and L Series models.
