Background and Identification
2005 marked the first cosmetic change to the Ford Focus since its introduction for the 2000 model year. It featured a new set of trim levels: S, SE, SES, and the performance-oriented ST. The car came as a 3 or 5-door hatchback, 4-door sedan, and also a wagon model (ZX3, ZX5, ZX4, and ZXW, respectively). The ST trim, which replaced the 2002-2004 SVT as the performance Focus, was only available for the ZX4.
The 2.0L Zetec engine from 2000-2004 was completely removed from the lineup, and the 2.3L Duratec engine was available only in ST models. All models came standard with a 2.0L Duratec engine, with a PZEV engine for states that required it. The suspension on the 2005 Focus was unchanged from 2000-2004 models, but the front struts were redesigned for 2006, and remained unchanged for 2007. All 2005-2007 models use front brake rotors that are larger in width than previous models, addressing common overheating and warping issues.
There are a number of exterior changes that make it easy to tell a 2005 or later Focus from the previous generation. The headlights and front grille were completely redesigned, getting rid of the turn signals inside the grille. The "Focus" badge on the trunk was changed to an all-capital letter design, which is easily distinguished from the previous generation's lower case trunk badge.
