Troubleshooting
For help troubleshooting common issues with this device, check out the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen Troubleshooting page.
Background Information
The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen is a laptop that was released in 2014, following the release of the 1st Gen in 2012. One improvement made between the 1st Gen and 2nd Gen was moving to the 4th generation of Intel CPUs from the 3rd. They also added higher resolution, an additional touchscreen, and an improved power port. The left and right buttons on the trackpad were removed.
The biggest difference that sets the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen from the 1st Gen is the 2nd Gen has an Adaptive Function Row above the keyboard. Unfortunately, the biggest widespread complaint about the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen is about the Adaptive Function Row, which is a touchscreen along the top of the keyboard that has different pressable icons depending on the app being used. One reason for this complaint is that there is no tactile feedback when the button was being pressed, so users must look down to make sure they are pressing the key. Also, unlike normal keys on a keyboard, if you wish to, for example, increase the volume by multiple units, you must press the button multiple times rather than holding down the button.
Other complaints include that the touchpad is too stiff when clicking it and the camera has poor image quality.
Lenovo sells its products in 160 different countries, so devices such as the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen are used by people all over the world. Since it is a business ultrabook, the intended user group is business people using their laptop for daily work. The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen was originally sold for $1679, but it is now sold second-hand for around $200, depending on the wear and tear.
The components that tend to fail the most are the battery, the fan, the USB/audio port, and the power jack, all of which are addressed in our troubleshooting page.
The subsequent Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon model, the 3rd Gen, has a newer CPU, an updated graphics chip, and a longer battery life. Also, they took away the Adaptive Function Row and put back the left and right buttons on the trackpad.
