The Xbox One Wireless Controller Model 1708 can be quickly identified by the presence of a full faceplate, since the X button is no longer covered by a separate piece of plastic from the rest of the buttons.

Other primary differences include a different texture of plastic and the presence of a integrated "grip" on the back of the controller.

If you want to be absolutely certain you have a Model 1708 controller, the battery compartment label will say Model 1708.

Shared features between models 1537, 1697 and 1708 include:

• The Start and Back buttons found on the 360 controller have been replaced with the Menu and View buttons, respectively.
• The triggers on the Xbox One controller have been mounted with individual rumble motors to enhance the gaming experience.
• The Xbox button now glows white when the controller is switched on.
• The X, Y, B, and A buttons are the only colored parts of the controller.
• The controller also features a micro-USB cable at the top of the controller to enable charging while plugged into the console. It can also be used to connect the controller to a PC.

Shared features between models 1697 and 1708:

• Model 1708 controllers feature an integrated 3.5mm headphone jack (software controlled). Compatibility is limited to the CTIA/AHJ standard.
  • Users with headsets that do not use this standard still need the headset adapter.

Features unique to the 1708:

• The back plastic on the controller has a texture that is different from Model 1697/1537 controllers.
• The front faceplate moves the X button cover to the faceplate. The plastic cover previously used has been size reduced and only covers the controller sync button.
• Microsoft offers the 1708 controller in White, Black, Green, Orange, Red and Blue as standard colors. Other color combinations (and options) are available through Xbox Design Lab for $20 more.
  • This controller was the first controller released with the Xbox Design Lab option.
  • If you do not like the stock colors or Xbox Design Lab options, special edition controllers are more common with this controller compared to previous controllers.

This controller is a very popular choice for PC gaming, since this controller works with more PC games natively since Xinput support is far more common. While this controller is compatible with most games, it does not support DirectInput.

Note: Windows 10 or newer is required to use this feature.

Custom mapping can be used with this controller in the Xbox Accessories application, but cannot be copied to the controller. The maps must be copied from your PC in order to use them.

While custom mapping is Windows 10/11 exclusive, the controller uses the default map in Windows 7/8.x operating systems.
